The Connecticut Urban Forest Council, Inc. (CUFC) is pleased to announce its 2023 Community Forestry Small Grants Program. Our small grants programs in 2023 will help existing organizations and municipalities address issues related to urban forest health. We expect to award 6 grants of up to $3,000.
Unlike previous years, proposals are being funded by two different sources of funds, each of which has its own requirements. Applicants must indicate whether their proposal is being submitted for Program A or Program B. Separate templates are provided for grant proposals related to these two programs.
Overview – Both Programs
Grant range: up to $3,000
Eligible organizations:
Program A: municipalities and 501(c)3 non-profit organizations
Program B: All groups, but with a focus on local non-profits and municipalities.
Application due date: April 30, 2023 at 4:00 p.m.

Project completion dates:
Program A: December 31, 2023
Program B: March 31, 2024
Grant Details and Guidelines: The Connecticut Urban Forest Council, Inc. (CUFC) is a statewide 501(c)3 non-profit organization composed of representatives from Connecticut environmental organizations, state agencies, universities, research institutions, corporations, professional communities, and citizen tree groups. Its purpose is to provide advice, assistance, education, information, and support to urban and community forestry professionals, associated professionals, municipal, state and corporate leaders, and volunteers. Our small grants program in 2023 will help existing organizations and municipalities address issues related to urban forest health. We expect to award 6 grants of up to $3,000.
Grant Payment, Acknowledgements, and Reporting: Grant requests may not exceed $3,000. Funds are paid upon submission of invoices to the CUFC. Applicants must be able to commit to the match as specified in each small grant program. Match can consist of funds from other donors or in-kind contributions (such as volunteer hours of labor). Any printed materials produced by the grantee must acknowledge the U.S. Forest Service and/or DEEP for having provided support.

Matching Funds Required: 25% of project total (3:1 ratio of grant funds to either additional funding or matching contributed provided by the grant recipient)

Priorities: Applicants to this grant program must show how climate change mitigation and equity and environmental justice components are included in their project. This small grants program is based on the larger Climate Change Grant program has conducted in the past. Applicants are encouraged to the look at the most recent Request for Proposal for that grant program in order to better understand the requirements for this grant program. However, do not submit an application using the Application Form included in that RFP. Please use either version of this Application form:

Sources of Funding: USDA Forest Service, through a grant provided to the CT Urban Forest Council, Inc.
Applications allowed from: Municipalities, 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organizations and other local organizations. Neighborhood groups and local organizations that are not formally incorporated may apply provided they are able to show in a satisfactory manner the importance of their project as well as the dedication of the members of their group to this project.
Matching Funds Required: 50% of project total (1:1 ratio of grant funds to either additional funding or matching contributed provided by the grant recipient)

Project Completion Date: March 31, 2024
Priorities: include (1) teaching about urban forestry and the tools used to manage urban trees and forests, and (2) increasing public awareness of opportunities to protect urban forestland and urban trees, emphasizing public benefits.
Examples of grant subjects include:
Grants to nonprofit organizations will be awarded to projects that directly benefit educational goals related to urban forests in Connecticut. Projects that serve neighborhoods or areas with low tree canopy coverage and limited resources, and/or that utilize partnerships to amplify the project’s impacts are strongly encouraged.
